Two Anguillan athletes, Mr. Gary Gumbs and Nashane Johnson traveled to Barbados over the weekend to participate in the Austin Sealy track classic. This event featured several local Barbados teams and squads from St.Kitts, St.Lucia, Dominica, Nevis and Anguilla. Both Mr. Gumbs and Johnson were ecstatic about their participation in the coveted event. The aforementioned athletes participated in the long jump, 200m, 400m and 800m. Running first ,Nashane Johnson took part in the 400m race but had failed to qualify for the finals. However, he atoned for his disappointment by placing third in a relatively fast 800m race. Johnson ran a time of 2.06 seconds, while first place won in 1:57. Mr. Gumbs, the younger member of the contingent was now effervescing with confidence as he prepared to run.
The 17 year old made the finals of the open men 200m race but could not secure a medal. The youngster came very close to clinching third place medal for the long jump. In fact his jump of 6.34m was 6cm short of getting the bronze. Though disappointed, Gumbs the only teenager in the long jump pit made a firm statement that he would be a force to recon with in time to come.
Both athletes have extended their thanks to the Anguilla Amateur Athletic association, especially Mrs. Wilma Proctor for the assistance in getting to Barbados and securing housing for them
