The Volleyball court at the Webster Park roared to life on Friday 16th June, with the Anguilla Development Board (ADB) sponsored business Volleyball league. During the brief opening ceremony Managing director of the ADB, Mrs. Althea Hodge expressed her elation about the realization of the tournament. Mrs. Hodge further stated the ADB will sponsor the event next year, therefore she is expecting more businesses on the island to participate and reap the health and comradely benefits. Sports officer Mr. Alkins Rogers was enamored about the resurgence of Volleyball which was once king of all sports on the island. Mr. Rogers also recognized Ms. Heather Williams for her tireless efforts at organizing this event.
The knock out tournament which followed the ceremony saw Teachers, MICU, Construction, Anglec and the Health authority engage in volleyball battles. In the first match the Electricians unplugged the power of the health authority. The health representatives played admirably but the electrical engineering skills of Eva and the high flier Sherwin were too much to handle. The score lines were Electricians 25 and health 16.
The second encounter witnessed the MICU department with living Volleyball legend Mr. Ken Banks, play against the Teachers. Lessons were taught and lessons were learnt in this match. The teachers seemed to be working as one cohesive unit with steady bumps, excellent sets and vicious spikes. However, MICU had an answer for every question. In one such demonstration, Mr. Banks blocked a thunderous slam by Ian “Tucker” Connor. With a simple smile, Tucker was reminded of who dominated the yard in years past. Despite this brief flash back, Teacher out pointed MICU with a score line of 26-24.
In what many saw as the unofficial finals, Anglec and the Electricians engaged in a high voltage thriller which left everyone sparking and twitching. “Boom C” and his Anglec team tried every trick in the book to unsettle his opponents. Just when one team seemed destined to win the Electrical guys bounced back. The match culminated with 25-13 win for Anglec despite many heroic slams from Sherwin and Marsha. Anglec’s win propelled them into the finals against the Teachers.
High on confidence, both Anglec and Teachers played a best of three set finals. The Teachers had a great lesson plan and it was flawless, with stinging serves and towering blocks. So effective was the plan that Teachers won the first set 26-24. The second set was the turning point in the match. Anglec high voltage undid the Teachers’ nerves and caused them to become reclusive. “Boom C’s” pin point serving and Cobo’s hitting caused Anglec win the set. In the third set both teams played like there was no tomorrow. Mrs. Adams dug like never before as she did everything in her power to help her team to win the cup. Unfortunately the blood was already in the water and the Anglec sharks just circled for the kill. They tore the third set from the hands of the Teachers with a score of 15-11, thus becoming the first ADB knock out champions.
