On Saturday Doc’s United took on a resurgent Spartans International squad in a rather tough encounter. Both teams played well, however the extra pressure applied by Doc’s United in the first half resulted in a goal that sent them ahead. Doc’s United seemed to be running on cruise control, as every play worked out in their favour. However, as the second half commenced it seemed that Spartans International had come out to play with heart and determination. They scored two goals to regain the lead, and played like the team of old, where good ball movements and passes were the norm. Though Doc’s United worked very hard there was no reward for them and the game ended with a 2:1 victory for Spartans International.
On Sunday Kicks United tried to ground the highflying Attackers and taint their record with a loss. Kicks United played with poise and confidence as the ball was distributed like hot cakes. Unfortunately an error by their goalkeeper, allowed Ian “Sugar George” Edwards (#11) to capitalize and score the Attackers first goal.
The most prolific scorer of the game, Addi John (#10), surfaced in about the fifth minute of the second half. As he got the ball from midfield he turned and rifled a shot towards the far pole that got passed an out stretched Kicks United goalkeeper. As the second half continued the game deteriorated to rough play by Kicks United. Spats of nasty tackles soon fell like rain as the pressure and frustration mounted on Kicks United. s
Late in the second half Glenville “Marly” Allen had the chance to bring his team within one goal but could not convert the penalty. Several minutes after the Attackers were awarded a penalty as a Kicks United defender brought down Addi John (#10) in the box. John showed what should be done with the penalty as he blasted the ball to the back of the net to put the Attackers up 3:0.
The referee was kept quit busy as he distributed yellow cards to aggressive plays. As noted throughout the tournament thus far, game officials need to be more cognizant of rules so more control can be maintained on the games.
