On Wednesday 28th March the Anguilla Female Football league (AFFL) got off to an auspicious start with a mind numbing match between the Youngsters and Super Stars.
The dark-grey clouds that assembled in the southeastern sky over the football field were an ominous sign of what was to come in this game. Only a few minutes into the match, fantastic Super Star's sweeper Monique Carty was sidelined with a severe thigh injury. The Super Stars immediately regrouped by sending sensational all purpose speedster Melissa “Melly” Carty to the defense.
Through the match both teams worked frantically to secure the upper hand but with good defense they kept each other at bay. In the 8th minute, attacking Super Stars forward Makaba Reid was the recipient of a rebound which she deposited to the back of the net.
The second half saw more pressure from the Superstars but it did not break the Youngsters moral. Midfield general Chandrise Richardson began orchestrating a counter attack, forcing the Superstars into retreat. A foul was awarded to Youngsters outside of the 18 yard box and a free kick resulted. Youngsters wasted no time in converting that kick into a goal. Once again Melissa Carty took it upon herself to try and secure victory for her team. She was all over but several counter attacks by the opposition made her realize her best efforts would be served as a defender. In the end the match ended with a 1-1 draw.
