MANCHESTER, United Kingdom – West Indies batsman and former captain Shivnarine Chanderpaul said that he was very happy to see all rounder Darren Sammy accept the challenge of playing Test cricket after the all rounder picked up seven wickets in the England second innings of his debut game at Old Trafford.
"It was a great start for him, I had a chat with him before he went on and I told him this is a wonderful opportunity and it depends on what he wants to do with it," the veteran of 103 Test matches said one day after Sammy's third day performance.
"I told him he could grab the opportunity with both hands or let it slide and he told me he will grab it with both hands and he actually went out and did that which was great to see," said the left hander who played a masterful unbeaten innings of 81 in order to keep the West Indies afloat on the fourth day as they chase 455 for victory.
Captain Daren Ganga also had high praise for Sammy's exceptional bowling performance.
"His bowling was phenomenal, the manner in which he plays his cricket, his energy, his enthusiasm, his discipline, seven wickets on debut is just reward for all those things, St Lucia and all of the Caribbean should be proud of his achievement," Ganga said.
After his heroics on the field Sammy said that he feared that Ganga would have removed him from the attack before he got his second wicket. However Ganga said that thought was not in his mind.
"He definitely showed that he was getting some movement with the old ball, even though there was talk of us taking the new ball I thought it very necessary for us to continue to persist because he was on song in terms of his rhythm and I thought it necessary for us to bowl the spinner – Chris Gayle – with Sammy," Ganga explained.
"Sammy proved that discipline, control and consistency definitely pay dividends, he put the ball in the right area and challenged the batsmen and got great results for it," said Ganga of his new medium-fast bowling charge.
