Ailing Powell wins Jamaica 100m race

KINGSTON, Jamaica (AFP): Asafa Powell ran 10.04 seconds in some discomfort to win the 100 metres on Saturday at the Jamaica Athletics Championships.

With a wind of 1.0m/s, Powell showed discomfort early in the race, slowing down twice before crossing the finish line ahead of Clement Campbell (10.10) and Nesta Carter (10.11).

Powell, the 100m world record holder, lay on his back after the race, before members of the medical staff took him away. Although he looked unwell, Powell opted against going on the stretcher, walking gingerly towards the medical area.

Meanwhile, in the women's event, Olympic 200m champion Veronica Campbell raced to a 10.89 world leading time. She defeated Kerron Stewart (11.03), Sherry-Ann Brooks (11.05).

"I am totally happy," she said. "I came prepared because I know that Kerron, Simone (Facey) and the rest of girls would put up a good competition here," she added.

In the men's 400m hurdles, Danny McFarlane ran 48.52 to beat Isa Phillips (49.23) and Markino Buckley ( 49.24) while Melaine Walker (54.98) took the women's event ahead of World Junior champion Kaliese Spaner (55.62).
