Summary: West Indies 208 for 7 (Devon Smith 61, Samuels 51, Chanderpaul 41) beat England 193 for 7 (Collingwood 79, Dwayne Smith 3-24) by 15 runsLONDON, United Kingdom – West Indies captain Chris Gayle spoke with the media after the West Indies' first 20/20 game against England. Following are excerpts from his responses to various issues raised with him by journalists.
On getting the first win against England:
I'm happy with that. I spoke to you guys (the media) yesterday about coming into this game with all the negatives so it was a tremendous effort from the guys (the players) and I can't really complain. That's what I wanted – a good start. It's up to us now to try and capitalize and build on it and go into tomorrow's game and try to outrun them again.
On what transpired before the penultimate over:
I was going to bowl the second to last over but I had a discussion with (Dwayne) Bravo and (Ravi) Rampaul and Rampaul said he can pull it back a bit and we will decide who is going to bowl the last over, whether it will be me or Brav. In the end Brav came up and said he wanted it.
On how fit Bravo was to bowl (Bravo is carrying an ankle injury):
We said (before the match) he wouldn't bowl. Obviously we didn't want to risk him but he came up to me and said because of the situation he wanted it. He always wants to participate in the game so I have to give credit to Bravo for doing that. He was injured but he wanted it and I gave it to him.
On whether he will get a ticking off from the physiotherapist Stephen Partridge for allowing Bravo to bowl:
The physio came up to me and said "hey what's happening there?". But I promised him he wouldn't bowl tomorrow.
On whether he thought it was slipping away when (Paul) Collingwood and (Michael) Yardy were batting:
I thought with Collingwood's experience you cant take anything for granted. Once Collingwood is at the wicket, he is capable of doing it. He has done it in the past for England already so he is not to be taken for granted. I was trying to assess the situation as quickly as possible, trying to find the right bowlers at the right time. I thought they played well, they put up a fight.
On Marlon Samuels' massive six off Ryan Sidebottom:
That was one of the biggest hits I've ever seen in cricket so far. I think he has gone past me now. It was a huge hit and I can't really complain. It is good to see him (Samuels) get some runs, he has been struggling over the last couple of games and hopefully he can carry on tomorrow.
On whether it was hard to pick the players up psychologically after the Test series:
We had a lot of discussion. The guys are aware of the situation and the guys pulled together and we decided that we were going to come out as a unit and guarantee once we get it right we are unbeatable.
