Reports from Jamaica are that Bob Woolmer, the Pakistan coach, has died in a Kington hospital after being found unconscious in his hotel room hours after his team suffered an embarassing defeat to the Irish at Sabina Park on Saturday.

The 58 Indian born Englishman had coached Pakistan since 2004 and his contract was scheduled to run out after the World Cup. Given the nature of their defeat and their early elimination this was most likely the end of his coaching career in Pakistan. When asked on Saturday if this was the end of the road as far as coaching international teams was concerned, Woolmer's reported response was, "I'd like to sleep on my future as coach," he said. "I've had bad days before, the worst of them was at Edgbaston in 1999 [when his South Africa team missed out on the final despite the game ending in a tie]. Things like this happen in cricket."
