July 02, 2007 VINCENTIAN PAMENOS BALLANTYNE made light work of his CARICOM rivals to win the third consecutive annual CARICOM 10-kilometre race in a time of 32 minutes, 14.41 seconds yesterday. The event, which started and finished on Bay Street, St Michael, was held by the CARICOM Secretariat in association with the Amateur Athletics Association of Barbados and the National Sports Council. It brought together teams from St Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago, St Vincent and The Grenadines, Anguilla and the host country. It was a prelude to the Caribbean Heads of Governments Conference which also got under way yesterday.
In addition to his first-place trophy Ballantyne took the cash award of US$1 200. Second place went to Zephrinus Joseph of St Lucia who also received a trophy and US$900. Third place went to Denzil Ramirez of Trinidad and Tobago who received US$700 along with his trophy.
In the female division, Aleke Morgan of Guyana was first in a time of 39 minutes, 57. 28 seconds, second was Sherwin Lesaldo of Trinidad and Tobago and Tonya Nero, also of Trinidad and Tobago, finished in third place.
In the juniors' division it was an all Grenada affair with Sherwin Paul winning the boys' section and Antonia Wilson the girls'. (CH)
