It Means A Lot To Me - Gayle

NOTTINGHAM, United Kingdom – West Indies captain Chris Gayle spoke with the media after the series winning victory in the third One Day International at Trent Bridge. Following are excerpts from his responses to various issues raised with him.

 On the series victory:
I'm delighted. I am very very happy. I have to give thanks to the guys for the support, the management team. I thought it was a tremendous effort. It means a lot to me, not only because I am the captain, even if I was a player under (Ramnaresh) Sarwan's captaincy it still would have meant a lot to me. You have to give credit to everyone. It's all about the momentum. The vibes on the field was so good and you are just happy and enjoying the moment.

On the team looking like a unified unit in the field:
We did a lot of planning and all the guys communicate well with each other and we have a lot of discussions and team meetings and we know what responsibility each guy has and all the guys deserve it. They need to take a rest now and take a rest after the Ireland tour and recuperate and come back fresh in September.

On the players looking really charged for the game:
It is something that we spoke about since last night, once we hit the ground we will be running at them from ball one and starting even before from the warm up. It really paid off in the end. To be one nil down and come from behind to win 2-1 it was tremendous and we have to give credit to everyone, everyone had an input in winning this series.

On whether he could point out a single factor that gave the Windies the edge:
I thought the players were outstanding, not just one individual. Man of the Series Shiv (Chanderpaul) was tremendous for us with the bat, Daren Powell, Ravi Rampaul, Fidel Edwards always giving us a good start and I have to give those guys credit. Everybody chipped in, everybody played a part and we were well backed up in the field as well so I recommend that these guys really deserve to take a rest.

On how his demeanor changed as captain:

A lot of people want to know what I am thinking but when you do not get the opportunity people won't know what I'm thinking. To be the leader and lead these guys was tremendous in the absence of our original captain, Sarwan. I am just the back up captain right now and whenever he comes back he will get the same support from the guys. Because we have won the series a lot of people might be saying that Chris should continue as captain but I think Sarwan really deserves his chance. It was unfortunate that he got injured.

On him playing an uncharacteristically controlled innings:
We lost a couple of wickets and I decided that I wasn't going to take any chance at all, I was just going to play according to the situation and eventually it worked for me in the end with a few chances. As a professional you should be able to adapt to situations and be able to adjust as well. It worked out well for me in the end there with Runako Morton coming in and picking it up for us and Bravo played a tremendous role and it was an entire team effort and the guys need to take a rest.

On the West Indies accelerating at the end of the innings after a slow period in the middle:
You have to give credit to England bowlers, they bowled well in the middle overs, (Dimitri) Mascarenhas and the other slow bowlers. They bowled well, using a lot of slower balls and put us back a bit. I think the England middle order bowlers were a bit under-used, I think they should have used them some more because they were pulling back the run rate for them. In the end it paid off for us with (Runako) Morton and (Dwayne) Bravo playing a big part in the innings. It is important to keep wickets in hand. Once you have wickets in hand it can always be a slog in the end.

On how the team improved continuously through the limited overs series:
First of I have the confidence in all the boys. We started with five league players and it wasn't the best start as I commented earlier but in the end we gradually picked up the momentum and carried it in a few warm up games and in the 20/20 (games) I said once we won that first game it would really set the tone for the entire series. It goes to show how well we play together and how unstoppable we look out there.

On whether the curfew will be relaxed after the victory:
We are driving to London right now and we need to take a rest, we are going to Gatwick to get a flight tomorrow to Ireland and another tour starts again. We might have a bit of celebrations on the bus, the guys deserve to take a rest but we have to not lose focus, we have three games more to go (in Ireland).

On Fidel Edwards coming of age and needing to stay fit:

It is important that Fidel stays fit. Watching Fidel's career over the years I think the way in which Fidel has been used in the past wasn't appropriate. I think there are times when you must know when to use Fidel depending on the occasion and the situation. He is a key player for us and you have to know when to use him and use him well.

 On Daren Powell's man-of-the-match performance:
Daren Powell has been tremendous. He bowled well in the Test series and he was one of our outstanding bowler in the World Cup as well and he has just been going on and on. In the first game Fidel picked up five, then Ravi (Rampaul) picked up four and now Powell (picked up) four so all our bowlers did well. Powell has been tremendous but he needs to work on his batting though and become a better all rounder.
