The West Indies Cricket Board has appointed former Australian Test Opener John Dyson as the new head coach of the struggling West Indies team in rebuilding in their post Lara era. The announcement was made following a meeting of the Board in Bridgetown Barbados on Saturday.
Dyson replaces fellow Australian Bennett King who oversaw the West Indies through a horrid home World Cup last year. He edged out another Australian, Dav Whatmore for the position.
Dyson took over from Whatmore as Sri Lanka's coach in 2003 and remained in the role for two years. An opening batsman, he played 30 Tests in the late 1970s and early 80s, scoring two centuries and averaging 26.64. He also played 29 One-Day Internationals.
He faces a daunting task of coaching a team that has won TWO of TWENTY FIVE Tests in the past 2 years. They are ranked #8 in both the official ICC Test and ODI rankings.
