After an eventful Saturday 17 when Ireland sent Pakistan packing and Bangladesh reminded the Indians why they were in the Caribbean, World Cup Cricket hit the competition snooze button and slowly meandered through a couple days of horribly lop-sided thrashings of minnows by top teams in near empty stands with balls flying over the boundary with ridiculous ease on one end and wickets tumbling like dominoes on the other.
Snooze I: Tue 20 ICC World Cup - 14th Match, Group A - Scotland v South Africa
Warner Park, Basseterre, St Kitts
South Africa won by 7 wickets (with 160 balls remaining)
Scotland 186/8 (50 ov) South Africa 188/3 (23.2 ov)
South Africa won using less than 1/2 of the number of balls they had allotted to them.
Snooze II: Tue 20 ICC World Cup 15th Match, Group C - Kenya v New Zealand
Beausejour Stadium, Gros Islet, St Lucia
New Zealand won by 148 runs
New Zealand 331/7(50 ov) Kenya 183 (49.2 ov)
Kenya batted into the 50th over, scored 148 less runs than New Zealand and lost all of their wickets in the process.
Snooze III: Wed 21 ICC World Cup 16th Match, Group B - Bangladesh v Sri Lanka
Queen's Park Oval, Port of Spain, Trinidad
Sri Lanka won by 198 runs (D/L method)
Sri Lanka 318/4 (50 ov) Bangladesh 112 (37.0/46 ov)
Bangladesh were bowled out for 112 runs in 37 overs, 198 runs shy of Sri Lanka's total.
Snooze IV: Wed 21 ICC World Cup 17th Match, Group D - Pakistan v Zimbabwe
Sabina Park, Kingston, Jamaica
Pakistan won by 93 runs (D/L method)
Pakistan 349 (49.5 ov) Zimbabwe 99 (19.1/20 ov)
Zimbabwe were bowled out for 99, as the resurgent Pakistan successfully defended their 349 run total and ensured Zimbabwe accompanied them out of the competition.
Thursday's Netherlands/Scotland game may be interesting since both teams are evenly matched but the question is, will anyone turn up at Warner Park to see it? Will they miss it if they dont?
In the other snoozer on Thursday, Canada will lose to New Zealand, barring an act of God.
No doubt the competition will begin its return to its fascinating demeanor on the weekend and the snooze will be off by the next round.
Look out for Sri Lanka, Australia, South Africa and a rebounding India as the competition continues and the minnows minus Ireland fly home.
